All meetings to 2027 →03What the decision does to price
The first spike is often not the move.
A decision brings a burst of orders at one exact minute. The first spike usually runs past the range of the hour before, where stops are resting. Then watch the close: when a five-minute candle closes back inside, the stops have been taken and the move often belongs to the other side.
- The hour before 8.8 pips
Price waits. Orders build above and below a tight range.
- The spike ▲ 7.7 pips
The decision lands and price runs above the high, into the stops resting there.
- The close back 5 min
A five-minute candle closes back inside the range. The stops are taken; the spike is spent.
- The other side −68 pips
With one side's stops gone, price goes for the other's: EUR/USD one hour after the decision.
first spikes closed back inside the hour-before range within 60 minutes. In 42 of them price then took the other side within four hours. The rest held their first move, and they are counted too.

Where the stops rest before each decision
Drawn from real 15-minute candles: the nearest standing high and low, and the two plays. A: the spike runs the high, closes back, and the low is next. B: the mirror. Neither is a promise; most days one of them plays and some days neither does. Vote on which one plays; the split shows once you vote.
Which play happens on EUR/USD?
The split shows once you vote. Voting closes at the announcement, in 16h 55m.
Which play happens on USD/JPY?
The split shows once you vote. Voting closes at the announcement, in 1d 6h.
Which play happens on AUD/USD?
The split shows once you vote. Voting closes at the announcement, in 5d 7h.
Which play happens on GBP/USD?
The split shows once you vote. Voting closes at the announcement, in 7d 15h.
05How to read a decision
Four moments, in order
A decision is not one number. It is four things released over about an hour, and price can turn at each.
- Days before
The expectation
What the market expects is already in the price. Only the difference between the decision and the expectation moves it, which is why a hike can sink a currency.
- T + 0
The decision
Hike, cut or hold, released at one fixed minute. The first spike is fast and runs both ways; it goes for where the stops are, not for the meaning.
- T + 0
The statement
The wording, the vote and, four times a year, the projections. One changed phrase about inflation can outweigh the rate itself.
- T + 30 to 60
The press conference
The governor answers questions, and the second move is often made here. On the Fed it starts thirty minutes after the statement.
- A hike, or a bigger hike than expected
- A hold when a cut was expected
- More hikes, or fewer cuts, in the projections
- Votes for a hike, or worry about inflation in the statement
- A cut, or a bigger cut than expected
- A hold when a hike was expected
- Fewer hikes, or more cuts, in the projections
- Votes for a cut, or worry about growth and jobs
Both are measured against what was expected. Hawkish vs dovish, in full →

07Questions
Interest rate decisions, answered
Short answers. Each bank's page goes further.
Add every decision to your calendarWhat is an interest rate decision?
The moment a central bank announces its policy rate: the rate it pays or charges banks overnight, which every other rate in the economy follows. Most major banks decide eight times a year, at a time fixed in advance. Markets move on the decision against what was expected, on the statement that comes with it, and on the press conference after.
When is the next interest rate decision?
The next one is the European Central Bank (ECB) on Thu, Oct 29 at 9:15 AM EDT. This week also: BoJ Thu, Oct 29, RBA Mon, Nov 2. The calendar has every meeting to the end of 2027.
What time are interest rate decisions announced?
Each bank has its own fixed time, in its own city: the Fed at 2:00 pm New York, the ECB at 2:15 pm Frankfurt, the Bank of England at noon London, the Bank of Canada at 9:45 am Ottawa, the RBA at 2:30 pm Sydney, the RBNZ at 2:00 pm Wellington and the SNB at 9:30 am Zurich. The Bank of Japan has no fixed time; it usually announces around midday Tokyo time.
How do interest rate decisions affect forex?
A currency tends to rise when its central bank is more hawkish than expected (higher rates, or more hikes signalled) and fall when it is more dovish. But the first move is often not the lasting one: across 105 decisions since January 2025, the first spike closed back inside the range of the hour before within sixty minutes 67 times (64%). How to trade them.
What do hawkish and dovish mean?
Hawkish: leaning towards higher rates to fight inflation, which tends to lift the currency. Dovish: leaning towards lower rates to support growth, which tends to weaken it. A bank can be hawkish while cutting, if it cuts less than expected or signals it will stop.
Where does the "expected" figure come from?
It is the consensus of economists surveyed for the FXStreet economic calendar. Markets also price each meeting through rate futures; the two usually agree in the final days before a decision.
Can I put the decisions in my calendar?
